Dettol Hand Wash, with E45.

When I was contacted by the lovely people from Spink, and asked if I wanted to review a bottle of Dettol Hand soap, with E45, I was quite keen to accept.

I don’t generally use antibacterial sprays and soaps, unless I am cleaning up after an illness, but I do make exception for in the kitchen, because I am very strict about food hygiene and hand washing, and with cold, flu and tummy bug season upon us, I thought it might be good to try some hand soap with a little added oomph and also one that promised to protect and moisturise our skin.

Their by line for the product is “Dettol and E45 have joined forces to create a hand wash that kills 99.9% of bacteria & removes viruses and helps to protect from dryness in every wash. Using Dettol with E45 Softness everyday protects your hands natural moisture level. Containing chamomile its unique formulation leaves your hands feeling soft, nourished and cleansed from bacteria”

Both Big Girl and I suffer from dry skin, and she has mild eczema and I have psoriasis, so finding a hand soap that is gentle, but effective is hard work. I have tried many, from the herbal and natural, to the more expensive brands. We have one that we use, that works quite well, and doesn’t dry out our skin, but it is hard to get, as I cant’ usually get it in my typical grocery shop, and it’s more expensive.

Having worked as a nurse, and also in infection control, I know that good hand washing, with soap and water is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses. I have taught my children how to wash their hands properly, from an early age, after they have been to the toilet, before they eat, when they have been out in the garden, when they have sneezed or coughed on their hands, and can get to sink, etc. I am not paranoid about germs and bugs, but there are times when  hand washing is important and using a soap that works helps too.

I have to say we were quite impressed with this soap. It promises to clean hands, whilst giving you the added protection of E45 emollient, which we also use for Big Girl’s skin, so it’s a product I know and trust. I found it didn’t dry out my hands, or make the skin cracked and dry, which is what most soaps do, and it doesn’t have a strong fragrance, in fact Small Boy says “it smells nice, I like this soap”, he is clearly a discerning product reviewer in the making! ;)

We used this soap in the kitchen, mainly as that is the hub of the house, where I cook, feed the children, and it is easier to help Small Boy reach up and wash his hands, for me, than to run up the stairs all the time. I would say it lasted well, on average we replace our soaps about once every 2 weeks, and you don’t need a lot of the soap to get a good lather and wash effectively. The pump bottle is easy to use, and all in all, I think as a family we found this product worked well for us, and I would recommend it, if asked, for my opinion on an antibacterial soap, that is kind to skin. We will be buying this, in the future.

A great marriage of two products here, I’ll be trying this out.

When I first read the tagline though, I confess I thought you’d gone doolally and had mixed this together on your own – which I thought was genius!
